As the month draws to a close, I sit here trying to decide what to write about. In less than 3 hours the clock turns over and breaks my (somewhat dubious) record of publishing an article every month. I figure 8 months of semi-solid dedication cannot hamper what I want to do so here we go. Today I want to talk about how I write my articles or at least part of the process (can’t reveal the full magic).
Generally speaking I will sit down and start splatter painting words across the page, trying to get the tie-dye of ideas cleared out and really cleanse what is underneath. This usually culminates in three or four paragraphs dedicated to useless or contradictory writing while I figure out what position I want to take for the day. Of course this is usually all with the help of spell check because without it, I would be stuck back in sophomore year of high school, wondering why my teachers keep failing me.
After a subject is firmly chosen, I start writing until my mind tells me I have enough, the previously typed paragraphs are deleted from existence and that idea paragraph is exploded. Which is usually eight hundred words or so, this severely depends on my knowledge and passion about a subject. After reading it over a few more times I either add words in or take them away, to make the flow of sentences smoother, closer to the way that I speak (which we are lucky I’m able to string things together overall). This sanding down helps me feel the structure and grain of my article, which in turn allows me to make additions like the comments for Austin Strobelight, that I akin to details in a carving. Are they needed? No. Do people like them? Who knows.
When I finally feel comfortable with what I have written, I will do one final look over changing spelling errors that spellcheck overlooks, making sure I actually sound slightly not drunk. The hard part comes after I am completely done however. I have to save full thing onto my computer and copy and paste it onto my website. For most people this step seems like it would be the easiest, but technology does seem to hate me and I have failed here a few times.
Now for anyone who would be copy and pasting this into word to check my count, yes this is a little low. And also yes this isn’t as in depth as I normally go about something. The point of this was to really get across how easy it is to write an article, it doesn’t take a genius (spellcheck checking in right there) or a literary master, I mean look at me. I have no four year degree, barely 10,000 words to my name online, and I still plug away all day. For those of you thinking of starting a writing project, be it book or article or jokes, I highly encourage you to spend the time and just try it out. This is something that takes no money, but something just as valuable, time.
Hopefully next month I can put out a much better article and actually explain what has been going on in my life since my last major update. Thank you as always for reading what I put onto this screen and I hope you have a good rest of your day.
